8289 - Fire Truck
8289 - Fire Truck

Buckle-up and put your helmet on because there is another fire hazard to fight with this awesome LEGO® Technic Fire truck. This sturdy high on its wheels Truck is both fit for city duty as an rough terrain. With the fire red and realistic looks no fire can be too high for the Cherry Picker on the back of this truck. This is so much more than just a model, as it has a range of real-world functions to help you distinguishing the fires. This model has steering from the back so you can easily move the truck in the best position, It has outriggers for maximum stability so you can move the bucket to whatever needed position and finally you can slew the boom and lift and lower the bucket to get as close as needed to the fire. This set has room enough to put some motors in to make it even feel more real.

This complex build is a real test of your building skills, watch the boom go up-and-down and left-and right when you finally are ready to turn the gears! On top:

  • it is a 2-in-1 model: rebuilds into a smaller fire tow truck
  • building instructions for both models in the box
  • measurements: Fire Truck 54,5cm high (bucket), 26cm long and 12.8 cm wide.

This set has some eye-catching details like dark gray seats instead of the regular blue-ones. It has a little detail like the flash light in the left-side compartment. The reels in the back mimicking the fire hoses. The front gives this set a real tough look which belongs to fire trucks in general to be impressive. Finally the little touches like the handle bars on the side are truly finishing the design of this set.

Features

Steering

The steering on this truck is pretty straight foreward with a rack and pinion system. What is the catch is that the steering wheel is just at the back of the truck, not colliding with the boom and bucket mechanism at all. Besides it just gives a better feel when driving the truck around because by pushing and steering in same move is way easier to control the vehicle in play.

Boom Lift

The boom lift on this fire truck is a mechanical device used to provide temporary access for fireman and their equipment to inaccessible areas at height like multi story buildings. This particular design consist of an articulated tower base boom lift connecting to a main boom which is carrying the bucket or aerial platform. The articulated tower boom makes sure that through the mechanism also the main boom is lifted and lower simultaneously. This in fact makes the mechanism simpler and as such more reliable, which is important for fire trucks working in emergency situations. While you turn the Light Bluish Gray Technic, Gear 12 Tooth Double Bevel (pink), the turn direction is angle 90 degrees by two yellow Technic Knob Cog / Gears to a Black Technic, Gear Worm Screw turning the Light Bluish Gray Technic, Gear 24 Tooth to which axle the lower boom of the tower base boom is connected. While lifting this boom the parallel boom will push the ligray levers to rais the main boom with the bucket. Really a genius construction for kids tolearn the basics and still have a lot of playfulness.

Slewing

The slewing function is well sized with the big Dark Bluish Gray Technic Turntable 56 Tooth with Black Top. This gives enough momentum to turn the whole lift construction starting with the Light Bluish Gray Technic, Gear 12 Tooth (green), where again the turn direction is angle 90 degrees by two yellow Technic Knob Cog / Gears to a Light Bluish Gray Technic, Gear 24 Tooth which moves the base. A simple but sturdy construction and the middle leaves room for the lifting mechanism to pull through. This construction makes a 360 degree turn possible. Because the turn knobs are on both sides for the vehicle you can easily turn the boom completely around without being in your own way. Bothe the controls for the slewing and lifti and lowering of the boom are covered by latches during transport.

Bucket

The bucket or areal work platform is fully equiped with a control panel and directions of use and max weight. It is size is 6 x 9 studs and build up of axles and connectors. The two Light Bluish Gray Technic, Liftarm, Modified Bent Thick 1 x 9 are linked freely with the main boom so in what ever height the bucket will stay horizontal. During the drive the bucket fits perfectly in the back of the truck just behind the reels for the fire hoses.

Cabin

The cabin is well designed and shows a tough look with the extended grill and bumper of technic brick instead of technic lift arm with both headlights and blue emergency lights. On top of the cabine the main emergency blionk lights are pretty realistic. In the cabin there is a mid console dashboard and fak steering wheel. The cabin got some detailslike the logo's on the side and the bar handles to get easily in and out of the cabin.

Seat

The seats have more detail than in general and the seats can flipback and forth. Unusual is the drak grauy coloring. In general the seats are made of blue beams. For thes seats even the headrests are reajustable. As said this set has a lot of finishing touches.

Outriggers

The outriggers can be pushed out and retracted through the Light Bluish Grays Technic, Gear 20 Tooth Double Bevel on both sides of the lift boom for both sides independently. Also this mechanisme works with the yellow Technic Knob Cog / Gears to turn direction by angle 90 degrees to push the lever for the outrigger in or out. It is a clever construct. Due to the black pins used the outriggers stay retracted. By pushing the outrigger out you have to force it a bit to get it in a 'stuck' position so when pressured it does not retract. However the downside is that the boom lift is constructed in such a way that the center of gravity never 'leaves' the base of the truck. No matter how high or low the boom is moved the truck will never tumble over without the outriggers placed.

Wheels and Tires

This set contains 4 wheel and tire of type:
  • Black Tire 56 x 30 R Balloon.
  • White Wheel 36.8mm D. x 26mm VR with Axle Hole.
