This Off Roader is a serious piece of work. A big two-seater truck with impressive big wheels. It is the second year of Power Functions. This by the way was the first set I bought after my dark years. A pretty long time taking in to considerations my fresh memory of my 8860 - Car Chassis set. During the build of this set I was flabbergasted about the development of Lego Technic. So this set is my new age favorite set for several reasons. To begin with the diversity in the parts making it a great set to create MOCs. Also the traditional black chassis with dark bluish grey coach and the orange hints for the seats makes this a great colored set. Besides this set has already nice features of its self:
- 4 wheel independent double wishbone with a sturdy suspension
- 8 cylinder, visible, engine, with rear drive and differential
- HOG-steering
- Front winch
- Gullwing-doors with pneumatic cylinders, hood and tailgate

This sturdy high on its wheels Truck is both fit for city duty as an rough terrain. With the fire red and realistic looks no fire can be too high for the Cherry Picker on the back of this truck. This is so much more than just a model, as it has a range of real-world functions to help you distinguishing the fires. This model has steering from the back so you can easily move the truck in the best position, It has outriggers for maximum stability so you can move the bucket to whatever needed position and finally you can slew the boom and lift and lower the bucket to get as close as needed to the fire. This set has room enough to put some motors in to make it even feel more real.

Set 8439 is nearly the perfect Front End Loader and as such recognized by Lego because the set is released 3 times. In fact, it is so good that it was re-released in in 2004 again. The list of firsts and bits of scale accuracy are large. There had been many front end loaders before, but this is the first and only pneumatic version. It is the first with four wheel drive and the first Technic model with an articulated chassis. It does nearly everything right including the scale range of motion, scale cabin, drive system, steering wheel, and accurate side and rear details. The huge 18x10 bucket was new for this model. It still stand up easily to the much newer and larger loaders of decades later.

This sets keeps intriguing me. Released in 2004 the sporty looking truck is a hit and continues to be. On the second hand market the prices are still premium for this set. I can't put a finger on it why exactly. The set doesn't do stickers but still has a very expressive look-and-feel. Maybe because it has also a pretty wide wheel base that also adds to the strong character. Besides it combines a lot of functionality like fake 6-cylinder engine, steering, reclining cabin, detailed seats and 3different addons with pneumatic features which are strong. Even I only managed to get my hands on this set more than 15 years later and I was flabbergasted by the character of this set.
With its big wide cabin and the panel fairings it is both a sturdy and sporty looking truck.
This set also comes with a special colored part a Black Technic Bush, introduced in 2002 in the Spybotics-theme also a decorative purpose like in this set. A year later this black bush is introduced in Technic-theme in this star-wars set 4481 - Hailfire Droid. A final trivia, despite the fact that this set is fully liftarm based it still has an even amount of studs wide chassis, where overtime this changed to uneven.
With the double tire rear axle and details on lighting both front and rear it is also a good looking design which does not lack stickers at all to my opinion. Because this set comes with 6 wheels and without stickers the possibilities are endless. You can build a dozen alternative moc's like passenger cars, SUVs, Jeeps or truck with trailer. Functions it carries are:
