This marvelous crane, was first released in 1995. This huge model is absolutely packed with functions. It does pretty well everything you would expect a real mobile crane to do. It has 4 wheel steering with a 6 wheel chassis. There are 4 outriggers which can actually lift the model. A pair of pneumatic actuators in series lift the boom which can then telescope with a crank. The hoist employs a ratcheting mechanism. A crank on the back slews the superstructure 360 degrees which is possible because all of the pneumatics including the pump are above the turntable. When fully deployed, the reach of this model is truly extraordinary; 69 studs!

The 8430 is a re-release of 8417 Mag Wheel Master and was back then the first attempt at a sport bike in the Technic line. The title of this set gives us a clue that the special wheels of this set may have been designed specifically for it, with sets 8428 - Turbo Command and 8462 - Tow Truck getting them just because they had already been made. In any case, no other sets ever used these wheels or tires, and the front narrow tire in particular is unique to this set. However, there were two more chances to get because this set was released before in 1998 as 8417 - Mag Wheel Master.
Like the other Tech Build sets this year, this model uses the new wheels and is blue with turquoise seats. Also like the others it makes heavy use of flexible tubes and ribbed hoses as styling elements. Like previous motorcycles, it uses a lot of non-square angles by pinning the frame together. This model does not have front suspension, but the rear suspension is an interesting type with an arm on only one side.

This small helicopter, a re-release from set 8812 from 1994, was one of the smallest to date. It features rotating main and tail rotors. The canopy is constructed from semi-rigid pneumatic tubing. 1994 was the first year that pneumatic tubing was used as a design element, and this in one of two models in which this was done that year.
A lovely little turbine part from the System line gives the engine a nice aesthetic touch.
This set was first released in 1994 as 8812 - Aero Hawk II.

Initially I was a bit surprised to see Starwars figures as technic sets and not really convinced that these should be in this theme. However reading about the heritage and the purpose of Jango Fett it fits just fine, being a template for the clone army, which is a key character of Lego figures. You can multiply them as much as you need to. A bit of history of this character:
Jango Fett emerges as a pivotal figure in "Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones," renowned across the galaxy for his unmatched prowess as a bounty hunter. His tale weaves through the fabric of the Star Wars saga, blending the lines between hero and antagonist. Selected by the Sith Lord Darth Tyranus, also known as Count Dooku, Fett's genetic code becomes the foundation for the Grand Army of the Republic's clone troopers. This grand army, originally commissioned by Jedi Master Sifo-Dyas, becomes entangled in the Sith's intricate scheme to dominate the galaxy.

The 8466 truck could be considered part of the supercar category given its host of functions and scale, but it is sufficiently different in topic to belong in 4x4s. It still has a V-8 engine, a 3 differentials for 4 wheel drive (or more accurately all wheel drive), a 5-speed gearbox with reverse, 4-wheel independent suspension, working steering, and a damping system that is used for gull wing doors. A rear pneumatic crane could also be added with a supplemental set.
This model introduced several new parts including wheel hubs, CV joints, panels in metallic green, and the marvelous liftarm frames (5x5L, 4x4, and 4x6). The combination of a studded and studless construction give this model the sturdiest and most rigid chassis of any large Technic vehicle. The model also uses a large number of ribbed hoses and flexible axles to suggest a curved external shape, while in actuality it is mostly empty space.

The 8465 Extreme Off-Roader seems to be based off an Icelandic formula off-roader. These hill climbing monsters have huge V-8 engines, but the model has only a square simulated supercharger scoop part unique to this model in gray. There is no functional engine, and in fact there are not many features for a model of this size. The model does feature wonderful suspension and steering, but the most striking aspect is the new painted metallic green color and silver ribbed hoses. The only parts using the metallic green are curved panels. This model also uses the new 4x6 frames to create a rigid chassis.

Set 8464 is nearly the perfect Front End Loader and as such recognized by Lego because the set is released 3 times. In fact, it is so good that it was re-released in two past years. The list of firsts and bits of scale accuracy are large. There had been many front end loaders before, but this is the first and only pneumatic version. It is the first with four wheel drive and the first Technic model with an articulated chassis. It does nearly everything right including the scale range of motion, scale cabin, drive system, steering wheel, and accurate side and rear details. The huge 18x10 bucket was new for this model. It still stand up easily to the much newer and larger loaders of decades later.
The model is constructed mostly of traditional plates and Technic bricks with just a few studless parts thrown in here and there. It is a very solid model and eminently playable. If I could have only one loader in my collection, this would be the one.
The later versions are identical in design but vary in packaging and instruction decoration.
First release in 1997 8459 - Pneumatic Front End Loader
Second release in 2004 - 8439 - Front End Loader

The 8463 (a.k.a. 8248 released in 1998) Technic forklift is quite different than its predecessors or successors in using a unique scissors mechanism to lift the forks. It has a Technic figure operator and a cockpit made from ribbed hoses, but has no mechanism for tilting the forks which are installed in an orientation which is slightly tilted back. This model is otherwise pretty simple and unremarkable, but is actually quite complex for so few parts. It fits the scale of the Technic figure very well.
This model was released in 1998 but for this year 2001, the packaging and instruction decoration were different, but the model is identical.

This red racing car is part of the Speed Slammers line so it is also made to use with the slammer launcher. It has no other functions. This is the largest model in the series and, with the most inertia, seems to perform the best in a race.
The 2 speed slammers released this year are modular and can usually be separated into a front and back section which can then be combined with the other models.

This strange little set may or may not be part of the Speed Slammers line, but I can't think of anywhere else to put it. It fits within the model numbers of the slammers, but functionaly it is more like a Competition set. It is very simple and has only the single function of using hammers to attempt to strike the target of the opposing vehicle. The two cars are identical apart from color.

"Aren't you a little skinny for a stormtrooper?". Well this ubiquitous Star Wars character certainly could use some bulking up. His head seems very oversized compared to his body. Like C-3PO, he has no articulation in the legs or torso. His main feature is a competition cannon on his right arm. The set includes an orange liftarm for the shoulder in case you want this stormtrooper to be an officer.
This model uses a lot of parts which are uncommon in white but otherwise unremarkable. Most of the construction is studless using axles and connectors with panels to close the most obvious gaps. As you can see in the side views, the whole figure leans forward a bit, but is reasonably stable on the large feet.

C-3PO is one of the only Star Wars characters to appear in every movie. This slim, annoying droid is a natural choice for a Technic model, but even so this figure is not very impressive. His legs and torso have no articulation but are locked in a straight, rigid position. The arms use balls joints at the shoulder and elbow so are somewhat posable. The main feature of the model is the ability to "explode" after some stormtrooper blast damage.
This model makes extensive use of a new metallic gold color. Note that this is not chrome gold which is used only for the dishes around the eyes. Rather, this a metallic paint that was applied on top of yellow parts. The yellow can still be seen inside the holes of the panels. This color was rarely used afterward.

Asimo (Advanced Step in Innovative Mobility) is a humanoid robot made by Honda. It was unveiled in 2000 as the first bipedal robot with a convincingly realistic human gait. LEGO released set 1237 as a promotional set with Honda. The only feature is a few pinned, posable joints.
This rare little set is a source of a few very uncommon white parts.

In 1999 and 2000 the Technic line included a totally new theme called Throwbots in North America and Slizer elsewhere. These were not made from traditional Technic parts, did not have traditional Technic functions, and were not vehicular scale models. Rather, these were anthropomorphic robotic dolls. The common function was a printed disc projectile. Each model featured a hand or claw made of a flexible material which could grip a disc and then, after being bent back, throw the disc. The system didn't work very well at all which may explain why this theme didn't last very long, but the basic idea of such models was continued with Roboriders and eventually Bionicle.

The Roboriders were released in 2000 and overlapped the Slizers. Like the Slizers, they departed from the usual Technic subject matter and parts. In this case, rather than anthropomorphic robots we have robotic motorcycles. Four of them were micro sized models with almost no features at all, six were small sized play sets with a single feature, and the final model was substantially larger. The common feature of the sets used a specialized flexible housing to throw the wheel discs. Sadly, this feature didn't really work at all which helps explain why this series only lasted a single year.

This Formula 1 style racer, released in 2000, was a big step for Technic and represented a lot of firsts. It was the first model with more than 1400 parts and was by far the physically largest model at the time, and retains the largest footprint and wheelbase to this day. It was so out of scale with the other models which preceded it that it is hard to visualize without comparing them side by side. A minifigure standing next to a wheel comes only up to the axle. Even the much larger Technic figures are still far too small for this model. They would need to be roughly twice as large to be in scale. On the box artwork a huge helmet of a driver is shown, but this part never actually existed. It might be assumed that such a large model would test the limits of the structural strength of Technic parts, but in fact the heavily braced chassis construction which uses both studded and studless beams is quite sturdy. In fact, this model is quite difficult to disassemble since some of the steps are not easily reversible.

Power Pulling or Tractor Pulling is a motorsport in which massive vehicles loosely based on tractors compete to pull a heavy sled as far as possible. The tractor is typically just a welded tube chassis with massive tires at the back, tiny tires at the front, and as many engines as possible. It turns out that Technic actually sponsored such a vehicle at the time, and this set is a scale model of the real thing. The set came with a VHS tape containing some race footage of the real Technic Power Puller. No other Technic set has ever come with a video tape!

Of all the Competition sets, the Stunt Race probably has the most play value. At its core is a motorized car which can be configured in three different ways using different detachable front and rear modules. Most unusually, there are a large set of brightly colored tracks used by players to change the direction of the car. There are also a set of accessories. With these parts, players can choose from among four different games. The large instructions manual includes all these options as well as "rules" for the games which are cleverly conveyed without words.
I resisted this set for many years because it looks so totally different than the typical Technic philosophy, but I have to admit that it is a lot of fun. Of all the sets listed here on Technicopedia, this one probably varies the most from the norm. Play sets of this type would be part of the Racers theme in later years.

The dueling models in this set are nearly identical, differing only in their color and pilot. They are therefore quite evenly matched. In each case the weapon is an extensible front fork. The intent is to strike the target of your opponent: no easy task if they are moving around. A successful hit yields a spectacular result. The pilot of the losing craft is forcibly ejected from the cockpit with a spring mechanism.
This set does not follow the color scheme (turquoise and purple) of all the other Competition sets. Instead it uses lime and orange, also very rare colors. Both sets from 2000, this and 8307, use these colors.

This set was a dramatic departure from traditional Technic, but there was nowhere else to put it in 2000. The following year, the new Racers line would become the home for this kind of model. This is a very simple motorized play set. The "4WD" in the title is accurate since this buggy is actually four wheel drive, but the "X-Track" is a bit of a mystery. There is no track and therefore there is certainly no X, but the model does drive and has remarkable power and durability.
As a play set, this model does more than just drive. Although it can overcome considerable obstacles, it can also be used in competitions using the included finishing gate. Instructions were also included for alternate configurations which could use the Supplemental speed computer.

This little green cruising tricycle has only a single apparent function: a steerable front fork. However, as part of the Speed Slammers line it is also made to use with the slammer launcher. It is the only such model to come without a launcher so you need to own one of the other models to use it. Even without the launcher, it is a perfectly good small model in its own right.
